Ken Leiter was a fine playmaking defenceman during his two NHL seasons with the New York Islanders, but his promising career was cut short after 143 games.

The native of Detroit, Michigan was selected 101st overall by the New York Islanders in 1980 after a strong freshman season at Michigan State. He played out his four years with the Spartans and was named to the CCHA first all-star team after his senior season in 1982-83.

Leiter made the transition to the pro game look easy by excelling with the CHL's Indianapolis Checkers in 1983-84. He scored 36 points in 68 games then spent most of the next two years in the AHL. In 1986-87, Leiter contributed 29 points in 74 games the dressed for 51 games the following season. Injuries forced him to sit out the 1988-89 season. Leiter played only four games for the Minnesota North Stars before he retired in 1989-90.
