Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Bill Lochead
Centre Bill Lochead played over 300 games in the 1970s with three different clubs. He was a fine goal scorer who was effective on the power play but generally played on weak teams.

The native of Forest, Ontario was a fine scorer in junior with the Oshawa Generals. Lochead hit the 50-goal mark twice in junior and was selected to the OHA first and second all-star teams once each. He was selected in the first round, 9th overall, by the Detroit Red Wings after scoring 121 points for the Gens. The young pivot scored 16 goals as a rookie with the Wings in 1974-75 playing on a line with Bill Hogaboam and Nick Libett. He was solid role player for four and a half years in Motown and hit the 20-goal mark in 1977-78 when the club reached the playoffs for the first time in eight years.

Halfway through the 1978-79 season, Lochead was claimed by the Colorado Rockies after Detroit placed him on waivers. In the off-season he was traded to the New York Rangers but dressed for only seven games in 1979-80. He spent most of the year with the AHL's New Haven Nighthawks where he scored 46 goals and was placed on the league's first all-star team.

Beginning in 1980-81, Lochead spent seven years in Europe, mostly in Germany. His best year was 1981-82 when he led the Bundesliga with 66 goals in 42 games while playing for the Bad Nauheim club.
