Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Ralph MacSweyn
Ralph MacSweyn was a part-time defenceman for the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1960s and '70s. His play was more functional and steady rather than flashy or rough, and he was more successful in the WHA and several minor leagues.

Born in Hawkesbury, Ontario, MacSweyn played senior with the OHA's Lancaster Dodgers before making his pro debut with the Johnstown Jets of the EHL in 1964-65. He became an important member of the club's defensive troops and was placed on the EHL North first all-star team in 1967. MacSweyn next joined the Quebec Aces of the AHL and became the Philadelphia Flyers' property when they purchased the club prior to the 1967-68 season.

Over the next five years, the solid rearguard was recalled several times by Philly and played superbly for Quebec. MacSweyn was one of the better defenceman in the AHL during the early '70s and was placed on the league's first and second all-star teams once each. The L.A. Sharks who signed him prior to the first WHA season in 1972-73 noticed his solid play. MacSweyn played with L.A. and the Vancouver Blazers over the next two years before returning to the minors. He retired in 1977 after splitting a season between the Richmond Wildcats of the Southern League and the North American League's Johnstown Jets.
