Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Frank Martin
Defenceman Frank Martin played nearly 300 NHL games with Boston and Chicago in the 1950s. He was adept at moving the puck up to his forwards and had a deceptively hard shot from the point. In his youth, he was as proficient in baseball as hockey and received an invitation to the Brooklyn Dodgers' training facility before opting to stay on the ice.

The native of Cayuga, Ontario was a top two-way defender in junior with the St. Catharines TeePees. He split his first pro season in 1952-53 between the Bruins and the AHL's Hershey Bears. That spring he played solidly in six contests while helping Boston reach the Stanley Cup finals.

Martin scored 20 points and was an important component to the club's transition game in 1953-54, but the Montreal Canadiens in the semi-finals swept the club. In October 1954, he was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks for Murray Costello. Martin helped anchor the Hawks' defensive brigade for three seasons and was selected to play in the 1955 NHL All-Star Game.

The veteran blueliner dressed for only three games in 1957-58 then was relegated to the AHL for the remainder of his career. In 1959, he was named to the league's second all-star team after enjoying a particularly strong year with the Buffalo Bisons. Martin retired in 1965 after playing 67 games for the Cleveland Barons.
