Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Jack McIlhargey
Defenceman Jack McIlhargey was a punishing hitter in his own zone who also kept the front of his net clear. His style of play never altered but he was generally solid in his own end in addition to being an enforcer.

The native of Edmonton, Alberta played junior in the WCJHL with the Victoria Cougars and Flin Flon Bombers. After signing with the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent, he spent most of his first four seasons as a pro in the minors. In 1974-75, he led the AHL with 316 penalty minutes that suggested he was perfect for the "Broad Street Bullies."

McIlhargey played 57 games in 1975-76 as an intimidating force on the blueline but also recorded a solid plus/minus rating of +11. He played 15 post-season matches as the Flyers reached the Stanley Cup finals. Halfway through the 1976-77 season, the hard-nosed blueliner was traded to the Vancouver Canucks with Larry Goodenough for Bob Dailey. McIlhargey spent nearly four years on the West Coast before he was re-acquired by the Flyers. In 1980, he played nine playoff games as the club went all the way to the Stanley Cup finals. He retired in 1982 after playing two seasons with the Hartford Whalers.
