Defenseman Jim McTaggart grew up playing hockey in Saskatchewan and was a star player with the Swift Current Broncos of the SJHL in 1976-77 at the age of 16. The following year he earned a spot with the Saskatoon Blades of the WCJHL. Midway through the 1978-79 season he was sent to the Billings Bighorns where he continued to play out his junior eligibility until the end of the 1979-80 season.

McTaggart was not selected in the NHL Entry Draft, but was signed to a free-agent contract by the Washington Capitals on November 9, 1979. He joined the Capitals for the 1980-81 season, playing 52 games, scoring a goal and seven points. He played another 19 games with the Capitals in 1981-82. In 71 NHL games, McTaggart scored three goals and 13 points.

McTaggart continued to play hockey at the professional level for another two years in the minor with the Wichita Wind and Montana Magic of the CHL and the Moncton Alpines of the AHL. After sitting out a three-year retirement, McTaggart returned to play the 1987-88 season with the Peterborough Pirates of the British Hockey League. In 28 games, he scored nine goals and 33 points. Also on the team that year as one of the three allowed foreign imports was former NHL star Garry Unger.
