Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Amby Moran
Amby Moran grew up in Manitoba and played with the Winnipeg Winnipegs in 1919-20 before moving on to play with the Brandon Elks, who played in the Allan Cup in 1921. the next four years of his career was with the Regina Capitals of the WCHL.

Moran saw his first NHL action in 1926-27 when he appeared in 12 games with the Montreal Canadiens who at the time were led by such legends as Howie Morenz and Aurel Joliat.

Moran loved to play cards, especially on the long trips when travelling from one city to another. While on the train with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1926-27, Moran and a few teammates were playing their regular game of cards. Defenseman Helge Bostrom was busy testing his brain power doing a crossword puzzle when one of the clues had his stumped. In fact it was the only word missing for a perfectly completed puzzle. "Hey Amby," Bostrom interjected, temporarily breaking up the concentration of the game of hearts, "What's a four-letter word meaning bird?" "Goose" was the response. "G-O-S-E - hooray, it fits." By now the rest of the players were in stitches at the pairs lack of spelling expertise.

In 35 games in the NHL Moran had a goal and an assist to go along with his 24 minutes in penalties.
