Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Allan Murray
After playing junior hockey in his hometown in the mid-1920s, Murray moved north and joined the South Porcupine Porkies of the Northern Ontario Hockey Association for the 1927-28 season. His defensive play was strong, and the Buffalo Bisons of the Canadian-American League (later to become the IHL) picked up Murray's contract the following season.

After five seasons with the Bisons, Murray was signed as a free agent February 20, 1933 by the New York Americans and sent to play for the Syracuse Stars of the IHL. Weeks into the 1933-34 season, Murray was summoned to the NHL. He played seven years with the Americans, including the terrific 1937-38 season when the Americans featured the defense pairings of Murray with Joe Jerwa, while Ching Johnson teamed with Hap Day -- the latter pairing both Honoured Members of the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Americans boasted the lowest goals against in the Canadian Division of the NHL that year.

Murray missed much of the 1938-39 season with a shoulder injury, and the New York Americans felt his loss considerably, as both Johnson and Day had retired that season. In desperation, the Americans put all-star forward Hooley Smith back on defense. Murray returned in 1939-40, and found his defense partners Hooley Smith and Charlie Conacher at various times. Eddie Shore was obtained partway through the season to aid the blueliners.

At the conclusion of the season, Murray retired from professional hockey play. He scored only five goals during his seven-year career but was noted for his excellent defensive abilities.
