Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Gerry Odrowski
Defenceman Gerry Odrowski played over 300 NHL games for three different clubs in the 1960s and '70s. He was an efficient passer who was tough to get around in his own end. Much of his pro career took place in the WHA and the minors.

Odrowski played junior in the OHA with the St. Michael's Majors and in the NOHA with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. In 1959-60 he enjoyed an outstanding rookie season in the pros with the Sudbury Wolves of the EPHL when he was chosen the league's top defenceman. The next year "The Hook" was a composed member of the Red Wings' blueline brigade and was on hand when the team reached the finals. He was solid again in 1961-62 but the Wings missed the playoffs and began to retool.

Odrowski spent nearly five years in the AHL and WHL before he joined the expansion Oakland Seals for 42 games in 1967-68. The next season he played 74 games and was a factor in the Seals second place finish in the West Division. The most notable incident in the defender's career with Charlie O. Finley's team occurred when he was hurt at Madison Square Garden and remained in hospital when the Seals forgot to take him home.

Odrowski fell out of favour in Oakland and ended up in the WHL for two and a half seasons before the St. Louis Blues sought his experience in December 1971. He was solid in 55 games but the Boston Bruins in the semi-finals overwhelmed the Blues.

The last four years of Odrowski's career was spent in the WHA. He added stability and playmaking savvy to the defence corps of the Los Angeles Sharks, Phoenix Roadrunners, Minnesota Fighting Saints and Winnipeg Jets before retiring in 1976. He became president of the WHA player's association and scored the first goal in the inaugural WHA All-Star game on January 6, 1973.
