Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Robert Palmer
When faced with a choice between the OHA and a chance to attend university and develop his game the college way, Rob Palmer chose the latter option by putting in four years at the University of Michigan. There the young blueliner skated his way through the WCHA as a stay-at-home defender who had a reasonably good knack for head-manning the puck.

He was selected 85th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1976 Amateur Draft. Palmer, however, opted to complete his schooling before turning pro with the Fort Worth Texans of the CHL and in 1977-78, with the Springfield Indians of the AHL. Later that season, he got the call to join the L.A. Kings.

On the West Coast, the rookie rearguard played well enough to warrant a serious look by the club's brass. While teamed with the veteran Larry Brown, Palmer managed to work his way through the usual freshman mistakes to level his game off as a dependable, defensive blueliner who continued to develop his old knack for setting up scoring plays from the back line.

By 1979-80, he reached the peak of his NHL career by netting 40 points and completing the season as a +29 on the plus/minus scale. From that point on, however, his relationship with the Kings fell into decline. He appeared in only 13 contests with the club to start the 1980-81 season before heading to the minors where he spent most of the two years that followed with the Houston Apollos and the Indianapolis Checkers of the CHL and the New Haven Nighthawks of the AHL.

It wasn't until later in 1982 that Palmer returned to the NHL as a free agent with the struggling New Jersey Devils. He put in a season-and-a-half of average hockey before getting his final demotion to the Maine Mariners of the AHL where he played out his career. He retired from hockey in 1986.
