Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Jim Pavese
American-born Jim Pavese showed great promise as he cleared creases and potted points for the Suffolk Royals of the NYJHL. And as his sights moved to higher levels within the world of hockey, he realized that an apprenticeship in Canada would ensure that his talents would find the best venues for development.

In 1978-79, he joined the Peterborough Petes of the OHA for 16 games before moving on to the Kitchener Rangers and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. While in Kitchener, Pavese established himself as a balanced blueliner who could play a sound, physical game while contributing to the offense at the other end of the rink. The St. Louis Blues took note, picking him up in the 1980 Entry Draft.

Pavese joined the Blues in 1981-82 and initiated a pattern of bouncing between the majors and minors until 1984 when he earned a regular spot at the NHL level. For the next three seasons, he enjoyed his most consistent output as a defensive defenseman who dished out plenty of grit for those opponents who ventured too close to his crease.

By 1987, however, injuries took their toll as Pavese earned travel points en route to New York, Colorado, Detroit and New Haven -- all in only one season. By the end of that year, he'd only logged 27 games worth of action. From then on, Pavese found it difficult to sustain his NHL form. He made a brief go in 1988-89 with the Red Wings and Whalers before retiring from hockey at the end of the season.
