Mark Plantery was born August 14, 1959 in St. Catherines, Ontario. A graduate of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior 'B' Hockey League's Thorold Black Hawks, Plantery joined the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League's St. Catherines Fincups in 1976-77 and was a member of Canada's 1977 World Junior Championship team.

In 1977-78 the St. Catherines, Ontario native returned to the OMJHL as a member of the Hamilton Fincups before splitting the 1978-79 season between the Brantford Alexanders and the Windsor Spitfires. In October of 1979 the Winnipeg Jets signed Plantery as a free agent. Plantery joined the Central Hockey League's Tulsa Oilers for the 1979-80 season before making his NHL debut with the Jets the following year. Even though he spent the majority of the season in Tulsa, Plantery played in 25 games with the Jets, scoring his first NHL goal and finishing with six points.

Plantery returned to Tulsa in 1981-82 before joining the American Hockey League's Sherbrooke Jets for one season. In 1982-83 Plantery played in Italy for HC Gardena-Groden before returning to North America the following year. For the next three years Plantery was a member of the International Hockey League with stops in Toledo, Flint and Milwaukee.

Throughout his career, Mark Plantery played in 25 NHL games.
