Jim Ross was born May 20, 1926 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His road to the NHL began in the OMHA where he spent two years (1942-44) before joining the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "B" Hockey League in 1944-45.

After only one year in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "B" Hockey League, Ross joined DeLasalle Oaklands High School before he became a member of the Perth Panthers in 1946-47.

Ross spent two years in the International Hockey League, one year with the Detroit Metal Mouldings (1947-48) and one year with the Detroit Jerry Lynch (1948-49) earning IHL Northern Division First Team All-Star honours in 1949.

Following his All-Star performance in 1949, Ross joined the Cape Breton Senior Hockey League and the Sydney Millionaires where he was a CBSHL First Team All-Star and led them to the 1950 Allan Cup tournament. Ross made the jump again the following year, this time to the Quebec Aces of the Quebec Major Hockey League.

In his only season in the QMHL, the Edinburgh, Scotland native was a QMHL Second Team All-Star, before making his NHL debut the following year with the New York Rangers.

The 1951-52 season saw Ross make his NHL debut with the Rangers where he played in 51 games, scoring two goals and adding nine assists for eleven points. Even though he spent the majority of the season in New York, Ross played a handful of games with the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mohawks.

Ross returned to the Rangers line up the following year, however, he played in only eleven games with New York while spending the majority of the season with the Western Hockey League's Saskatoon Quakers.

From 1952 to 1955, Jim Ross was a member of the Quakers organisation, capturing WHL First Team All-Star honours in 1954 before retiring at the end of the 1954-55 season.

In 62 career NHL games, Jim Ross scored two goals and added eleven assists for 13 career NHL points.
