Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- John Schella
Defenceman John Schella played parts of two seasons with the Vancouver Canucks in the early 70s. He was better known as a gritty blueliner with offensive abilities in the WHA.

Born in Port Arthur, Ontario Schella played junior in the TBJHL with the Fort William Canadians and with the OHA's Peterborough Petes. The Montreal Canadiens prospect was relegated to the CHL and WHL until the Canucks in the 1970 Expansion Draft claimed him. Schella split the 1970-71 season between the NHL and the Rochester Americans of the AHL. The next year he played a regular shift in 77 games but struggled with his defensive game.

Prior to the 1972-73 season Schella joined the WHA's Houston Aeros and spent five years there. He helped the club win the Avco Cup in 1974 and retired in 1979 after playing one year in the PCL and AHL.
