Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Stu Smith
Stu Smith was born March 17, 1960 in Toronto, Ontario. The second round, 39th overall selection of the Hartford Whalers in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft, Smith is a graduate of the OMJHL's Peterborough Petes.

After suiting up for the Seneca Sailors of the OHA-B League, Gordon went on to play three seasons with the Petes, helping them reach three straight Memorial Cups in 1978, 1979 and 1980. A sound defenceman with offensive upside, Smith suited up for Canada at the 1980 World Junior Championships before making his NHL debut with Hartford during the 1979-80 season.

Although he spent the majority of the 1979-80 season in Peterborough, Smith would see action in a handful of games with the Whalers. After getting a taste of the NHL in 1979-80, Smith would split the following season between Hartford and the club's AHL affiliate in Binghamton. Over the course of the next three seasons, the former Pete would continuously split his time between Hartford and Binghamton, before being acquired by the Los Angeles Kings in November, 1984.

Upon being acquired by Los Angeles, Smith, who had been playing with the AHL's New Haven Nighthawks continued to suit up for the club and went on to spend the entire season in the AHL before opting to retire from hockey at the conclusion of the 1984-85 season.
