Defenceman Bill Speer spent parts of four seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins in the 60s and 70s. He was a decent playmaker and checker who also played in the WHA and several years in the minors.

Born in Lindsay, Ontario Speer played junior with the OHA's St. Catharines Teepees. He then apprenticed in the EPHL and AHL before making his NHL debut by playing 68 games for the expansion Penguins in 1967-68. He split the next season between Pittsburgh and the minors before he was picked by the Bruins in the Intra-League Draft to add depth.

Speer played 27 games for Boston in 1969-70 and helped them win the Stanley Cup by playing a useful checking role in eight playoff games. By the next season he was an AHL regular where remained until he joined the WHA's New York Raiders in 1972-73. He played one more year with the Raiders then spent 13 games with the senior Orillia Terriers in 1974-75 before retiring.
