Defenseman Leif Svensson spent parts of two seasons with the Washington Capitals in the late 70s. He was a fine playmaker and solid positional defender who was best known as a domestic stalwart in his native Sweden.
Born in Harnosand, Sweden, Svensson played with Nacka and Sodertalje before moving up to Stockholm's powerful Djurgardens club. In June, 1978 he was signed as a free agent by the Caps then scored 31 points and recorded a solid -3 plus/minus rating as a rookie. He then helped the Swedes win the bronze medal at the World Championships before returning to Washington for one more year. Svensson retired in 1982 after playing two years with Djurgardens.
