Defenseman Ralph Taylor played parts of three seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks and New York Rangers in the 20s and 30s. He was a reliable defender in his own zone who could play physical when the need arose.

The Toronto native played junior with the home town Canoe club before joining the Chicago Cardinals of the AHA in 1926-27. He then spent two years as a stabilizing influence on the Hawks' blueline before he was picked up on waivers by New York. Taylor was a solid addition in the last 22 games of the 1929-30 regular season and also played four games the club when it made it to the semifinals.

Beginning in 1930-31, Taylor spent several years in the AHA before retiring in 1939. He split his his time between the Kansas City Greyhounds, Tulsa Oilers, Chicago Shamrocks and the St. Louis Flyers. Taylor was a member of championship teams in Chicago in 1932 and Kansas City two years later.

Signed as a free agent by Chicago (AHA), October 29, 1926. Loaned to St. Louis (AHA) by Chicago for cash, November 23, 1928. Traded to Tulsa (AHA) by Chicago with cash for Teddy Graham, January 4, 1930.
Cash amount in January 4, 1930 transaction was increased after Taylor was not offered on waivers to other NHL clubs. Claimed on waivers by NY Rangers from Chicago, January 8, 1930. Traded to Chicago Shamrocks (AHA) by NY Rangers for $7,500, October 27, 1930. NHL rights transferred to Detroit from Chicago Shamrocks (AHA) after AHA club owners purchased Detroit franchises (NHL and IHL), September 2, 1932.
