Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Sparky Vail
Melville "Sparky" Vail spent two seasons with the Springfield Indians before signing on with the New York Rangers in September of 1926.

Vail, who played both defense and left wing appeared in 18 games with the Rangers during the 1926-27 season and managed 3 goals in that time. He also suited up for six playoff games as well, but was unable to register a point in the post-season. During his second season he played 32 games with the New York, but more games didn't mean more offense as his production dropped to just a goal and an assist. Once again "Sparky" was kept off the score sheet during the playoffs.

In October of 1930 the Rangers sold Vail to Providence of the Canadian-American League and this transaction signaled the end of his NHL career. Vail spent the next three years with the Providence Reds then moved on to International American League in 1933 where he had four stops in the following three seasons. In 1936 with ten seasons as a professional to his credit Melville Vail left the game of hockey behind.

Two years later "Sparky" returned to the ice with the Toronto Red Indians, a club in the Toronto Senior loop. In 1938-39 Vail had just four points but the next year, his final season as a player, he led the league with 25 assists.
