Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Rick Vasko
In 1977 Rick "The Moose" Vasko was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL and the Indainapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association. Vasko, whose father also was an NHL player, elected to follow in his dad's footsteps and signed with the Detroit Red Wings.

Vasko played just three games during his first season as a pro, and after a full year in the minors the following season he then played only got into 8 the year after but by his third year he spent a quarter of the season in the Motor City. Vasko played 20 games for the Wings and recorded the only points of his career when he scored 3 goals and 10 points from the Detroit blueline.

While he'd only played 31 games in the NHL over four years without much fanfare, in the minor leagues, with the Detroit's farm club, he'd established himself as a skilled offensive defenseman in that same time frame. Vasko in his first three seasons, when he played 70 or more games, he put up 41, 59 and 61 points, while exceeding the 20-goal plateau twice. In 1980-81, when he missed a chunk of his minor-league season while with Detroit, Vasko still was able to score 17 goals and 51 points in just 57 games.

Despite his promising minor league number the Red Wings traded Vasko in May of 1981. Now property of the Calgary Flames, Vasko was unable to make their roster out of training camp and spent the 1981-82 season back in the minors, where his production slipped. It would prove to be the last season of his career.
