Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Howard Walker
Defenseman Howard Walker signed with the Washington Capitals as a free agent after his highly-successful collegiate career with the University of North Dakota. While with the Fighting Sioux Walker was named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team in 1979 and was then a WCHA First All-Star Team member as well as an NCAA West First All-American Team member in 1980, a year in which he helped lead the Sioux to their third National Championship.

In 1980-81 he played just seven games in the minors as a rookie pro with the rest of his time spent in the NHL patrolling the Washington Capitals blue line. Walker contributed two goals and 11 assists in 64 games with Washington while registering an impressive plus-nine plus/minus rating. Despite his rookie success, the emergence of rookie defensemen Timo Blomqvist and Greg Theberge as well as the acquisitions of Terry Murray and later Lee Norwood made the Washington blue line a crowded place and Walker was limited to just 16 appearances while the rest of his time was spent in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears.

In June of 1982 Walker was traded, along with the George White and three draft choices, to the Calgary Flames in a deal that landed goaltender Pat Riggin in Washington.

With the Flames, Walker was lost in the shuffle and found himself out of their plans almost from the get-go. He played just three games with Calgary with the rest of his campaign spent with Colorado of the Central League. At the end of the season, with his career heading in the wrong direction, Howard Walker retired.
