The Winnipeg Jets drafted defenseman Bill Whelton after his first of three seasons with Boston University. Whelton's NHL debut came in 1980-81, the same season he completed his collegiate career.

The Jets inserted Whelton into their lineup for two games but his stay was rather uneventful. Whelton had no points while taking one shot and registering a minus-one plus/minus rating.

His first full season as a professional came the next year and it was spent entirely in the minor leagues with the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League. In 1982 in mjoved on to the American League to join Winnipeg's top farmclub, the Sherbrooke Jets. After two seasons in Sherbrooke without another chance to play in the NHL, Whelton left the game of hockey.

After one season away the defenseman returned to the ice to play one final campaign. Whelton's swan-song season was spent in Italy where he scored 33 points in 35 games.
