Brian Young was born October 10, 1958 in Jasper, Alberta. A three-time Western Canada Hockey League Champion, a Memorial Cup finalist in 1976, and a two-time Memorial Cup winner in 1977 and 1978 with the New Westminster Bruins, Young was the 4th selection, 63rd overall of the Chicago Black Hawks in the 1978 Amateur Draft.

A Second Team All-Star in the WCJHL in 1978, and a member of the 1978 Memorial Cup All-Star Team, Young also represented Canada at the 1978 World Junior Championships, capturing a bronze medal.

Young spent his first two seasons of professional hockey as a member of the New Brunswick Hawks of the American Hockey League, earning a spot on the AHL Second All-Star Team in 1979-80. In 1980, he made National Hockey League debut with the Chicago Black Hawks. In eight games with the Black Hawks that season, Young recorded two assists while spending most of the year with the Dallas Black Hawks of the Central Hockey League.

After only three games into the 1981-82 season with the New Brunswick Hawks, Young headed to Germany to close out the 1981-82 season before spending the next five seasons playing for Schwenninger ERC and Kolner EC in Germany.

In 1987, Young travelled to Switzerland where he played three seasons with EHC Chur.

Following the 1989-90 season, Brian Young had played in eight career National Hockey League games, recording no goals and two assists
