Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Michal Grosek
Born in Vyskov, Czechoslovakia, Grosek was chosen 145th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. After showing promise with the Skoda Zlin club in 1992-93, the next year he came to North America and scored 25 points in 30 games for the WHL's Tacoma Rockets. Before the end of the season the gifted youngster was recalled to the Jets to play three games and was then assigned to the AHL's Moncton Hawks.

After splitting the 1994-95 season between the minors and Winnipeg, Grosek seemed stuck in neutral. His play was revitalized after a trade to the Buffalo Sabres in February, 1996. Grosek proved to be a timely goal scorer and gritty defensive player for his new club. In 1998 he scored the overtime winner that eliminated the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round of the playoffs. He built on this achievement in 1998-99 and scored a personal high 50 points while helping the Sabres reach the finals for the first time since 1975.

Grosek's play was up and down in 1999-00 so the Sabres included him in the deal with the Chicago Blackhawks that landed veteran pivot Doug Gilmour. He did last long in the Windy City and was sent to the New York Rangers on the eve of the next season. Upon his arrival in New York, Grosek went on to split his next two seasons with the Rangers and their AHL affiliate in Hartford before he joined the Boston Bruins in 2002-03.
