After moving to the Toronto area at a young age, Bryan Muir found his way on to the Wexford Raiders line-up, where they captured the Metro Toronto Junior Hockey Championship. After one season in Wexford it was decision time for . He elected to pursue his education through hockey at the University of New Hampshire.

After three seasons with the Wildcats, Muir joined Canada's National Team playing in 42 games, he also represented Canada in the Izvestia Tournament in Moscow in 1995. From his play overseas, the Edmonton Oilers signed him to a five game tryout. By the fall of 1996, he had established himself as a big league player, he spent the next two seasons split between the Oilers and their AHL affiliate in Hamilton.

From 1998 until 2001, Muir traveled between the NHL, the IHL and the AHL playing with the New Jersey, Chicago and Tampa Bay in the pros as well as Albany, Portland and Detroit in the minor circuit.

In early 2001, the Colorado Avalanche acquired Muir in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning adding strength to the already sturdy Avalanche defence corps. Splitting the balance of the season with the big club and its AHL affiliate in Hershey. A member of Colorado's Stanley Cup winning team in 2001, Muir spent parts of three seasons with the Avalanche organization before being acquired by the Los Angeles Kings in the summer of 2003.

Muir would play only one season in the Kings organization before having his rights acquired by the Washington Capitals in the summer of 2005.
