Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Maxim Bets
Speedy winger Maxim Betts first caught the attention of NHL scouts in 1990-91 when he scored 71 goals and 108 points in 60 games while playing junior hockey in Russia.

Betts came to North America at the age of 18 and played two years of major junior hockey with the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL. In his first season he had an immediate impact, netting 49 goals and 106 points in 54 games. He followed that up with a 116-point season in 1993-94 and also represented Russia at the World Junior Championships.

By the time Betts had finished his junior hockey his NHL rights had been acquired by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in March, 1994 from the St. Louis Blues who had chosen him in the 1993 draft. He played three games with the Ducks that season where he was held pointless, and that turned out to be his final NHL career totals.

Although Bets seemed to have a natural knack for scoring, his style of play just never seemed to fit that of the rugged North American style. He tried to transform his game to a more appropriate style, but he found it quite difficult. Rather than continue to struggle in the minors Bets opted to return to Russia in the fall of 1996 where he remains playing to this day.
