The Vancouver Canucks chose Mike Wilson 20th overall in the 1993 Entry Draft. On July 8, 1995, his rights were traded with Michael Peca and a 1st-round draft pick to the Buffalo Sabres for Alexander Mogilny and a 5th-round draft pick. That season, Wilson made his NHL debut on November 18 against the Devils. On January 30, 1996, he scored his first goal, against the Islanders' Eric Fichaud. In 1996-97, he played 77 games as the Sabres improved 19 points to win the Northeast Division title. In the playoffs, he helped the Sabres reach the second round. In 1997-98, Wilson scored eight points in 66 games. In the playoffs, he helped the Sabres reach the Eastern Conference finals.

In 1998-99, Wilson was traded on March 23 to the Florida Panthers for Rhett Warrener and a 5th-round draft pick. He played 34 games between the two teams. In 1999-2000, he tallied 20 points in 60 games.

On July 5, 2001, Wilson signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He played Junior B hockey in Georgetown, Ontario. In 1992-93, he joined the OHL's Sudbury Wolves and scored 13 points as a major junior rookie. The following season, he scored 26 points in 60 games. In 1994-95, he contributed 13 goals and 47 points, while scoring nine points in 18 playoff games.

In 1995-96, Mike turned pro and played 15 games for the AHL's Rochester Americans.
