Shawn Rivers was born January 30, 1971 in Ottawa, Ontario. Brother of Boston Bruins defenceman Jamie Rivers, Shawn Rivers signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the summer of 1992 after his final season of junior eligibility.

As a member of the Ottawa Jr. Senators of the Ontario Junior Hockey League in 1988, Rivers was recruited by St. Lawrence University of the Eastern Conference Athletic Association where he spent two seasons (1988-1990) as a defenceman for the Skating Saints.

Rivers left St. Lawrence University following his Sophmore year and joined the Ontario Hockey League's Sudbury Wolves where he had the opportunity to play with his younger brother Jamie, who was entering his rookie season with the Wolves in 1991-92.

After an 80 point season his final year of junior eligibility, the Tampa Bay Lightning signed Rivers as a free agent. Even though he spent the majority of the 1992-93 season with Tampa Bay's affiliate team in the International Hockey League the Atlanta Knights, Rivers played in his only four NHL games with the Lightning during the season.

Returning to the Knights for the 1993-94 season, Rivers was a key player in Atlanta's Turner Cup championship season. The following year Rivers joined the IHL's Chicago Wolves where he spent the 1994-95 and a part of the 1995-96 season before returning to Atlanta for 21 games and then joining the American Hockey League's Syracuse Crunch for a handful of games to end the 1995-96 season.

Shawn Rivers left North America to play in Germany for a year following the 1995-96 season, before returning in 1997-98 after playing 13 games in Switzerland at the beginning of the 1997-98 season. When he returned from Switzerland, Rivers became a member of the IHL's San Antonio Dragons, before joining the Western Professional Hockey League's Lake Charles Ice Pirates for a handful of games and ending the season in the AHL with the Springfield Falcons.

After playing for four different teams in 1997-98, Rivers left North America for the second time in three years, joining the Alpenliga League (Austria, Italy, Slovenia) in 1998-99.

As of the 1998-99 hockey season, Shawn Rivers had played in four career NHL games, having accounted for two assists.
