Lance Ward was born June 2, 1978 in Lloydminster, AB. The first round, tenth overall selection of the New Jersey Devils in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, Ward never signed a contract with the Devils and re-entered the draft in 1998 and became the third round, 63rd overall pick of the Florida Panthers.

A graduate of the WHL's Red Deer Rebels, Ward is hard-nosed winger who spent four seasons with Red Deer before splitting his professional season with the AHL's New Haven Beast, the ECHL's Miami Matadors and the IHL's Fort Wayne Komets. Ward spent parts of two more seasons in the AHL with the Louisville Panthers before making his NHL debut during the 2000-01 season.

The Lloydminster, AB native went on to play parts of five seasons with the Panthers organization before being acquired by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks during the 2002-03 season. Upon his arrival from the Panthers, Ward went on to see limited action with the Ducks in 2003-04, while playing a handful of games with the club's AHL affiliate in Cincinnati.

In the summer of 2005, Ward was acquired by the Ottawa Senators.
