Andrei Zyuzin was born January 21, 1978 in Ufa, USSR. The first selection, second overall, by the San Jose Sharks in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, Zyuzin was rated in 1995-96 as the top prospect outside of the NHL by the Hockey News.

He was a gold medalist for Russia at the 1996 European Junior Championships where he was named Best Defenceman and named to the All-Star Team. Zyuzin, a two-time bronze medalist at the World Junior Championships for Russia (in 1996 and '97), he played for his hometown Ufa Salavat and led all defencemen on his team in scoring during the 1996-97 season.

In 1997-98, Zyuzin made his NHL debut with the San Jose Sharks, spending the majority of the season with them and playing a handful of games with the Kentucky Thoroughblades of the AHL. Zyuzin finished his first professional season in the NHL with six goals and seven assists for 13 points in 56 games.

The talented defenceman played parts of three seasons with the Tampa Bay organization before being dealt to the New Jersey Devils. Upon his arrival in New Jersey, Zyuzin split his time with the Devils and their AHL affiliate in Albany.

After only one game with the Devils in 2002-03, the Minnesota Wild acquired Zyuzin, who quickly became a key contributor to the team's success and their drive to the Western Conference final later that spring. In 2003-04, Zyuzin enjoyed his finest offensive season to date with 21 points (8-13-21) in 65 games.
