Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Steve McKenna
At 6'8" and 255 pounds, Steve McKenna is certainly easy to spot on the ice and is the second tallest player ever to skate in the NHL. Ottawa's 6'9" defenseman Zdeno Chara has the honour of being the tallest of all time.

McKenna played for his hometown Cambridge Winterhawks of the OHA Junior B ranks in 1991-92. From 1993 to 1996 he was enrolled at Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts and was signed to a free-agent contract by the Los Angeles Kings in the spring of 1996.

McKenna played nine games with the Kings in 1996-97 and saw his status advanced to a regular roster spot the following year when he was inserted into the lineup for 62 games, scoring four goals and eight points. He dressed for 66 games with Los Angeles over the next two years but was left unprotected in the 2000 Expansion Draft and subsequently picked by the Minnesota Wild. He lasted just 20 games before being shipped off to the Pittsburgh Penguins in January, 2001.

McKenna joined the New York Rangers for the 2001-02 season, and along with Sandy McCarthy, served the primary role of enforcer for the blueshirts when the going got rough. In 54 games with the Rangers, McKenna lit the lamp twice and added one assist while spending 144 minutes in the penalty box most of which were accumulated by way of his 18 fighting majors.

He re-signed with Pittsburgh as a free agent in the summer of 2002 and upon his return set a career high in goals with nine in 2002-03.
