Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Ladislav Benysek
After playing his junior hockey with his hometown team, the Czech club team HC Olomouc, defenseman Ladislav Benysek was taken by the Edmonton Oilers with the 266th overall draft pick in the 1994 Entry Draft. Born on March 24, 1975, Benysek made the trek to North American to join the Oilers farm team in Cape Breton for the 1997-98 American Hockey League season. That season, he played 58 games and scored two goals and nine points. However, he chose to return to Czech, and his hometown team, the following season.

After two seasons back in Europe, Benysek returned to North America and the Oilers organization. With the Oilers' AHL affiliate now in Hamilton, Benysek spent the bulk of his time there, but also was up in Edmonton for a two-game stint. In his two NHL games, Benysek failed to make the scoresheet and elected to return to Europe again following the season.

Benysek spent three years playing defence for Sparta Praha back in the Czech Republic while his NHL rights switched from the Oilers to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim as a result of the 1999 NHL Waiver Draft. Despite a new NHL team, Benysek remained in Europe and thrived, winning a gold medal in the '99 World Championships, and capturing a league championship with Sparta in 1999-2000. However, when his rights changed hands again, his North American professional career took a turn for the better.

Benysek was claimed by the Minnesota Wild in the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft, and this time his trip to North America was much more rewarding. Making the Wild roster out of training camp, Benysek was an NHL regular in 2000-01, suiting up for 71 games and scoring seven points.
