Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Karel Rachunek
Defenceman Karel Rachunek became a regular with the Ottawa Senators in 2000-01. His fine instincts and puck handling ability made him a natural fit with the fast and skilled Sens.

Born in Gottwaldov, Czechoslovakia, Rachunek played with the junior and senior ZPS Zlin clubs and was taken 229th overall by the Senators in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. In 1999-00 he ventured to North America and spent the bulk of his time learning the ropes with the IHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. Rachunek notched 33 points and was a solid +17 in his first full NHL season in 2000-01.

Injuries plagued Rachunek's 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons, yet the talented Czech still managed to record 29 points and was a solid +30 despite playing only 58 games in 2002-03. In 2003-04, Rachunek saw action in 60 games with the Sens before being dealt with young prospect Alexandre Giroux to the New York Rangers for Greg DeVries.

The next two years of his career was spent competing in both the Czech Republic and Russia with HC Znojemsti Orli Znojmo and Lokomotiv Yaroslavl respectively. Rachunek returned to the NHL in 2006-07 and spent a season with the New York Rangers, scoring six goals and adding 20 assists over 66 regular season games played.

In the summer of 2007, Rachunek was signed as a free agent by the New Jersey Devils.
