Petr Svoboda was born June 20, 1980 in Jihlavia, Czech Republic. The second round 35th overall selection of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Svoboda came to North America in 2000-01 after spending the early part of his career in the Czech Republic League.

A hulking defenceman, Svoboda is a two-time member of the Czech Republic's World Junior team (1999-2000) and went on to make his North American professional debut in 2000-01. After splitting his first season between Toronto and the team's AHL affiliate in St. John's, Svoboda spent the better part of the next two seasons in the AHL before returning to the Czech Republic during the 2002-03 season.
