Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Christian Backman
Christian Backman was born April 28, 1980 in Alingsas, Sweden. The first round, 24th overall selection of the St. Louis Blues in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Backman spent the early part of his career in Sweden playing for Vastra Frolunda HC before making his North American debut in 2002-03.

A two-time member of Sweden's World Junior Team (1999-2000), Backman is a hulking stay at home defenceman who would make his NHL debut with the Blues in 2002-03 while spending the better part of the season with the Blues AHL affiliate in Worcester. In 2003-04, Backman played his first full season with the Blues before helping Sweden capture the silver medal at the 2004 World Championships.

Backman topped that accomplishment two years later by claiming Olympic gold in Torino. That season with the Blues, Backman posted career highs in goals (6) while he skating in his 100th NHL game. After missing 21 games in 2006-07, a relatively healthy Backman returned to the Blues line-up in 2007-08. He appeared in 45 games with the Blues and scored 10 points prior to being traded from the club to the New York Rangers at the NHL trading deadline on February 26, 2008.

As a member of the New York rangers, Backman played on the club's third defensive pair and managed to tally three goals and 15 assists in 63 games throughout his 63-game season. His short stint in the Big Apple came to an end on July 2, 2008 when the club dealt the defenseman to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
