Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Todd Reirden
Todd Reirden was drafted straight out of high school in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. The New Jersey Devils used the 242r nd pick upon the young Tabor Academy graduate. He chose to continue earning an education that fall and enrolled at Bowling Green State University, where he continued to show improvement in his game. In 1994, Todd took the leap into the professional ranks as a free agent. He split the season between the Raleigh IceCaps and Tallahassee IceTigers, of the ECHL, and the Albany River Rats, of the AHL.

The next three seasons saw Reirden spilt time among five different teams. He started off in the ECHL, with Tallahassee, and wound up in IHL, with Fort Wayne. Fortunately, the moves were sending him higher in the professional hockey world. Todd Reirden's breakthrough came when he signed with the Edmonton Oilers on September 17, 1998. Although he played most of the season with the Hamilton Bulldogs, of the AHL, he did get a shot with the Oilers the following January.

On January 7, 1999, Reirden made his NHL debut in Phoenix. The team traveled to Anaheim for a game on the tenth, at which time Reirden scored his first point. He scored a goal and chipped in with a helper but it wasn' t enough for the Oilers lost 6-4. In spite of his time away from the Bulldogs, he still led their defensemen in scoring by the end of the season. The St. Louis Blues claimed Reirden off of waivers in September. That season, 1999-2000, saw him set NHL career marks in most categories. The Blues ran up the best record on the season and captured the Presidents' Trophy.

His 2000-01 season was cut short by a foot injury early in the term. Rehabilitation and a conditioning assignment in Worchester limited him to 38 games. Even so, he did set a personal mark for penalty minutes. Reirden left the Blues at the end of the season. On July 26, 2001, he joined the Atlanta Thrashers for their second NHL season. Again, he suffered an early season injury but Reirden has since netted his first goal with the team on November 16, 2001.

After one season in Atlanta, Reirden was acquired by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the summer of 2002 before joining the Phoenix Coyotes organization midway through the 2003-04 season.
