Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Ossi Vaananen
Ossi Vaananan was born August 18, 1980 in Vantaa, Finland. The second round, 43rd overall selection of the Phoenix Coyotes in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Vaananan came to North America in 2000-01 after playing six seasons in the Jokerit Helsinki junior and senior systems.

A solid defender, Vaananan joined the Coyotes in 2000-01 and led all NHL rookies in hits with 190 and finished his first two campaigns with positive plus/minus rating. Injuries limited the young blueliner in 2002-03 to a mere 67 games and spent the better part of the 2003-04 season with Coyotes before being dealt to the Colorado Avalanche along with Chris Gratton at the trading deadline.

Vaananen was a regular over two seasons in Colorado before he opted to sign overseas with the Swedish league. He returned to the NHL in 2008 after he singed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Flyers.

On the international stage, Vaananen is a two-time member of Finland's World Junior team (1999-2000), a four-time member of its World Championship team (2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008), and has suited up for his homeland at the 2002 Winter Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
