Paul Manning was born April 15, 1979 in Red Deer, Alberta. The third pick, 62nd overall selection of the Calgary Flames in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Manning is a graduate of the WCHA's Colorado College Tigers.

The hulking defenseman from Red Deer, Alberta spent four seasons at Colorado College amassing 12 goals and 60 assists for 72 points before having his NHL rights dealt by Calgary to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

A gifted athlete, Manning is also known as an outstanding baseball player, being drafted in the 20th round by the New York Yankees in the 1997 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. In 2001-02, the Red Deer native made his professional debut with the UHL's Elmira Jackals while spending the majority of the year with the AHLs Syracuse Crunch.

Manning returned to Syracuse in 2002-03 while seeing action in eight games with the teams parent club, the Columbus Blue Jackets.
