Garrett Burnett was born September 23, 1975 in Coquitlam, British Columbia. A free agent signing of the San Jose Sharks in 1998, Burnett is a hard nosed winger who played one season in the OHL before making his professional debut in 1995-96.

After splitting his only season in the OHL with Kitchener and Sault Ste. Marie in 1994-95, Burnett went on to play eight seasons in the minors with various teams in the COHL, CHL, ECHL before signing his first NHL contract with the San Jose Sharks in the summer of 1998. Upon signing with San Jose, Burnett joined the team's AHL affiliate in Kentucky and went on to play two seasons with the club while leading the league in penalty minutes with 506.

In 2000-01, Burnett joined the IHL's Cleveland Lumberjacks and spent one season with the club before splitting the following year between New Haven of the UHL and Cincinnati of the AHL. Following one season with the AHL's Hartofd Wolf Pack, the Coquitlam, British Columbia native signed as a free agent with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and went on to play in 39 games with the Ducks scoring his first NHL goal and finishing his first NHL season with 184 penalty minutes.

In the summer of 2005, Burnett was acquired by the Dallas Stars.
