Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Ryan Bast
This defender was in the middle of a tug of war between two teams, a war that required the NHL to step in and mediate a tense peace. Bast, a physical player who piled up the penalty minutes in the WHL and AHL, was signed by the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent on May 18, 1998. Two days later the Calgary Flames challenged the signing, protesting to the NHL that Bast was in their system as a member of the Saint John Flames in the AHL.

On May 22, the league ruled that Bast was not Calgary's property he had no NHL clause in his contract and had never been drafted. The same day the league also announced that Bast was not the property of the Flyers Philly's offer had exceeded the rookie salary cap. A compromise was reached that sent Bast to Philadelphia, along with Calgary's eighth-round selection in the 1999 Entry Draft for the Flyers third-round choice. For all of this, Bast played two games in the NHL that season, recording an assist before landing, again, in the AHL, where he has been ever since.
