Sean Selmser was born November 10, 1974 in Calgary, Alberta. The seventh round, 182nd overall selection of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, Selmser is a graduate of the WHL.
After four seasons in the WHL with stops in Moose Jaw (1991-92) and Red Deer (1992-95), the Calgary, Alberta native made his professional debut in 1995-96 splitting the year with the ECHL's Hampton Roads Admirals and the AHL's Portland Pirates. Over the next two seasons, Selmser shared his time with Canada's National Team while playing a handful of games with the IHL's Manitoba Moose while returning to Portland for the post season.
Over the better part of the next three seasons, Selmser spent more time in the minors before making his NHL debut as a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets during the 2000-01 season. Selmser joined the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs in 2001-02 before heading overseas the following year as a member of the Ayr Scottish Eagles.
