Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Johan Hedberg
Johan Hedberg was born May 5, 1973 in Leksand, Sweden. The ninth round, 218th overall selection of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, Hedberg played five seasons honing his skills with Leksands of the Swedish Elite League before making his North American debut in 1997-98.

Upon his arrival in North America, the swedish netminder split his inaugural season with the ECHL's Baton Rouge Kingfish and the IHL's Detroit Vipers and Manitoba Moose before opting to return to Sweden in 1998. After one season back in Sweden, Hedberg joined the San Jose Sharks in 1999-00. In his first season with the Sharks organization, Hedberg spent the entire year with the team's AHL affiliate in Kentucky posting a 18-9-5 record with a 2.68 GAA before joining the Pittsburgh Penguins in the latter stages of the 2000-01 season.

After starting the season in the IHL with the Manitoba Moose, the Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Hedberg at the March trading deadline. Upon his arrival in Pittsburgh, Hedberg went 7-1-1 in nine games and was a key player in the team's run to the Eastern Conference final, only to fall short against the New Jersey Devils. A workhorse for the Penguins in 2001-02, Hedberg won a career high 25 games and finished the year with a 25-34-7 record with a 2.75 GAA.

In 2002-03, the Penguins struggled and Hedberg was limited to 41 games due to injury and was subsequently dealt to the Vancouver Canucks in the summer of 2003. Hedberg went on to play one season with the Canucks organization before being acquired by the Dallas Stars in the summer of 2005, following the NHL lock out of 2004-05.

Hedberg started 19 games with the Dallas Stars in 2005-06 and posted a respectable 12-4-1 record. However, the following season he was unsigned and the Thrashers signed the Swedish netminder in the summer of 2006.

Over the next several seasons "The Moose" would share time in the Thrasher goal with a number of other goalies, often being relegated to backup duty and never appearing in more than 50 games for the club.
