Jean-François Damphousse was born July 21, 1979 in Alexis-des-Monts, Quebec. The 1st choice 24th overall selection of the New Jersey Devils in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Damphousse is a graduate of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Moncton Wildcats and of the Quebec Midget AAA League's Ste-Foy Gouverneurs.

A butterfly style goaltender, Damphousse possesses a great sense of timing and is excellent at reading the play and anticipating shots. The native of Alexis-des-Monts, Quebec spent three seasons in the "Q" before joining the Devils AHL affiliate following his 1998-99 season with Moncton.

After making his professional debut with Albany during the 1998-99 season, Damphousse went on to split the 1999-2000 season with Albany and the ECHL's Augusta Lynx before becoming a main stay in the Albany lineup in 2000-01. In his first full season with the River Rats, Damphousse finished with a 24-23-3 record with a 2.86 goals against average before making his NHL debut with New Jersey in 2001-02.

Damphousse spent the majority of the 2002-03 season with the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, before joining the Saint-John Flames. Damphousse was called up by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in 2002-03, but saw no NHL action.
