Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Les Kuntar
Goaltender Les Kunter excelled in college and the minors but never landed a full time position in the NHL. He had good size, quickness and lateral movement but always seemed to be caught in a numbers game when trying to stick in the NHL.

The native of Elma, New York, starred in high school at Nicholls high. He was spotted by the Montreal Canadiens who chose him 122nd overall in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. Kuntar decided to accept a scholarship to St. Lawrence University to further his education and gain valuable playing time. His finest year came in 1990-91 when he was placed on the ECAC first all-star team after leading the conference in wins, shutouts, and goals against average.

In 1991-92 he spent time with the Habs' top farm team in Fredericton and played 13 games for the U.S. national team. He played all of the 1992-93 season in the AHL then saw his only NHL action in 1993-94 as an injury replacement. Kuntar posted a 2-2 record and a respectable 3.18 goals-against average but he was faced with several goalies ahead of him on the Montreal depth chart, namely Patrick Roy, Frederic Chabot, and Andre Racicot.

Kuntar played four games for the U.S. at the 1994 World Championships when the team barely missed out on a medal. In June 1995 he signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Flyers but he remained in the minors until retiring two years later.
