Vesa Toskala was born May 20, 1977 in Tampere, Finland. The 4th round choice, 90th overall selection of the San Jose Sharks in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, Toskala came to North America in 2000-01 after spending the better part of his career playing in Finland.

Rated as one of the top goaltenders in the Finnish Elite League in 1998-99, Toskala was a member of Finland's National team at the 1999 World Championships and was a member of its World Junior team in 1996 and 1997.

After arriving from Finland, Toskala went on to lead San Jose's AHL affiliate in Kentucky to the 2000-01 Mid-Atlantic Division title with 22-13-5 record, 2.77 GAA, and 9.11 save percentage before splitting his 2001-02 season with San Jose and the AHL's Cleveland Barons. Toskala saw action in 10 games with San Jose in 2002-03, and earned his first career NHL shutout before returning to Cleveland of the AHL.

In 2003-04, Toskala went on to back up Evgeny Nabokov, seeing action in 28 games and finishing the season with a 12-8-4 record. Toskala would spend another season in San Jose before being dealt along with teammate Mark Bell to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a conditional first round pick, a second-round pick in 2007 and a 2009 fourth-round pick.

On January 31, 2010, Toskala's time in Toronto would come to an end. He was traded to Anaheim along with winger Jason Blake in exchange for J.S. Giguere.

On March 3, 2010, the NHL trade deadline, Toskala would be on the move again, this time beign dealt by the Ducks to the calgary Flames in exchange for Curtis McElhinney.
