Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Kari Takko
Kari Takko was a solid back up goaltender during six NHL seasons spent mostly with the Minnesota North Stars. His big league career was sandwiched between an impressive career as a domestic and international player in Finland.

Born in Uusikaupunki, Finland, Takko played seven years with Assat Pori. He played for Finland at the European Junior Championships in 1979, the 1981 and 1982 World Junior Championships, the 1983 and 1985 World Junior Championships, and the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics. The talented netminder was chosen 97th overall by the Minnesota North Stars at the 1984 Entry Draft.

After he was named to the Finnish all-star team in 1985, Takko came to North America. He played 43 games for the AHL's Springfield Indians and started one game in Minnesota. In 1986-87, he recorded a 13-18-4 record for the Stars and represented his country at the 1987 Canada Cup. He split the goaltending chores in Minnesota with Jarmo Myllys and Jon Casey but began to see less ice time by 1989-90. The next year, he toiled briefly for Minnesota and Edmonton before joining Finland at the 1991 World Championships.

Takko returned to Assat Pori in 1991-92 and remained there for six years. He made two appearances for his country at the 1996 World Cup then played a season in Sweden with HV-71 Jonkoping before retiring.
