After playing two seasons of junior hockey with the Oshawa Generals, Paul Harrison was drafted by Minnesota in 1975. During his first two seasons with the North Stars, he played eight games in the NHL. When he wasn't with the Stars in the 1976-77 season, he was setting records in the AHL with the New Haven Nighthawks. Harrison played a league leading 55 games for the Nighthawks, totaling 3,265 minutes and posting 32 wins. He was named to the AHL Second All-Star team.

He spent all the following season in the NHL, again with the North Stars, who soon after traded him to Toronto for a fourth round pick in the 1981 Entry Draft. He got 30 starts to the Leafs during the 1979-80 season, but with a 9-17-2 record he found himself back in the AHL. In 1980-81, he moved to the CHL, where he played 37 games for the Dallas Black Hawks and posted a league leading four shutouts. He made one last appearance for the Leafs during the playoffs before being traded to Pittsburgh in September 1981. After 13 games with the Penguins, Buffalo claimed him off waivers. His last game in the NHL was a playoff appearance for the Sabres in 1982.
