Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Goran Hogosta
Netminder Goran Hogosta played briefly with the New York Islanders and Quebec Nordiques in the 70s and 80s. He was better known for his heroics between the pipes as a domestic and international competitor in his native Sweden

Born Appelbo, Sweden, Hogosta began his domestic career with Tunabro and played for his country when they won gold then silver at the European Junior Championships in 1972 and 1973. The young talent was also named the top goaltender at the European junior tourney in 1973.

In the mid-70s he moved up to the stronger Leksands club and was elevated to the senior national team. Beginning in 1975, Hogosta played in four straight World Championships where he won one silver and two bronze medals. He also teamed with Hardy Aastrom when Sweden participated in the inaugural Canada Cup tournament in 1976. In 1977 Hogosta was named the top goaltender at the World Championship and placed on the all-star team. A few weeks later he signed as a free agent with the Islanders.

Hogosta only played nine minutes of one game in New York since they had Billy Smith and Glenn Resch splitting the netminding chores. In August, 1979 Hogosta was shipped to the Nordiques for youngster Richard Brodeur. The veteran netminder struggled to adjust to the North American game and was sent to the minors after posting a 5-12-3 record and a 4.15 goals against average. In 1980-81, Hogosta returned to Sweden and played four years with Vastra Frolunda before retiring.
