Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Gary Inness
Netminder Gary Inness was one of the few players in the 1970s to make the jump straight from Canadian University hockey to the NHL. He spent parts of seven seasons in the league and performed admirably considering he rarely benefited from solid defensive support.

Born in Toronto, Inness never played major junior hockey. He excelled with the junior B Weston Dodgers then enrolled at McMaster University in Hamilton before transferring to the University of Toronto. Inness's plan was to become a teacher but his play at McMaster inspired Pittsburgh Penguins' scout Rudy Migay to recommend that he attend training camp the next fall. Inness finished his degree in Physical Education and History then signed with the Penguins.

As a rookie, he played 20 games and posted a respectable 3.26 goals against average. The following year he earned the number-one goaltending position and won 24 games while helping the Penguins register 89 points. They appeared poised for an appearance in the semi-finals but gave up a 3-0 advantage in games and lost to the New York Islanders in the quarter-finals.

Inness's playing time was reduced in 1975-76 when the Penguins' organization went bankrupt and the new ownership made wholesale changes. Prior to the trade deadline that year he was acquired by the Philadelphia Flyers as Bernie Parent's backup. He played sparingly in 1976-77 before taking a short sabbatical from the NHL to tend goal for the WHA's Indianapolis Racers until that club folded. After signing as a free agent with the Washington Capitals in 1978, Inness caught fire and posted a 3.16 average in his first 19 games to earn the nickname "The Man With The Golden Glove." The affable netminder split his last three seasons between the NHL and the Hershey Bears of the AHL. He retired in 1981 with 58 wins and a career goals against mark of 3.40.
