Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Randy Ireland
Goalkeeper Randy Ireland lived out childhood dream by playing briefly in the NHL in the late 1970s. Sandwiched between a solid junior and minor pro career was a two-game stint with the Buffalo Sabres in 1978-79.

The native of Rosetown, Saskatchewan played over 100 games for the Saskatoon Blades of the WCJHL before he was acquired by the Portland Winter Hawks in 1976-77. Ireland recorded three shutouts in Portland and the team might have made a trip to the Memorial Cup if they weren't up against the powerful New Westminster Bruins, national champions in 1977 and 1978.

Lacking an NHL contract, Ireland signed on the Flint Generals of the IHL where he played 45 games in 1977-78. His solid year was noticed by a few scouts and he was chosen by the Buffalo Sabres 82nd overall in the 1978 Amateur Draft. The next fall he impressed the Sabres' brass in the pre-season but the club was deep in goal with Bob Sauve ready to step in as Don Edwards' backup. Ireland appeared in two games and totaled thirty minutes of playing time. Following his NHL cameo, Ireland played with six teams in four leagues before retiring in 1983.
